(CBS DETROIT) — The 2024 general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5, and polls are opening across the state as voters in Michigan decide whether to elect former President Donald Trump or current Vice President Kamala Harris, among many other local elections.

Here you can find out when the polling stations open and close on election day.

When do polls open in Michigan on Election Day?

Polls open at 7 a.m. local time across Michigan. Most of Michigan observes Eastern Time, but a small portion of the western Upper Peninsula observes Central Time.

Michiganders can return their mail-in ballots to their precinct on Election Day.

When do polls close in Michigan on Election Day?

Across Michigan, polls close at 8:00 p.m. local time. Dickinson, Gogebic, Iron and Menominee counties observe Central Time, so their polls close an hour later at 9:00 p.m. ET.

As long as you are in line by 8:00 p.m. local time, you have the right to cast your vote.

When will the Michigan election results be available?

There is no exact time for the publication of the election results. In the past, the first results came in around 8:08 p.m

In an interview on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” last Sunday, said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson She assumes that the unofficial results will be available by the day after the election.

“In 2020, we had the results of our highest voter turnout election in Michigan history within 24 hours of the polls closing. The unofficial results were finalized at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. So we're pursuing that again this year. We have more. We have the ability to process ballots earlier than Election Day, where we were limited in 2020. So I'm optimistic that we could see the results even sooner, but I would guess the end of the day on Wednesday as the best guess as to how we're going to perform.

However, we will always prioritize accuracy and security over efficiency. Because we know how much people want these results, we will still make sure the process is safe and accurate before releasing anything to the public.

However, we understand people’s energy and enthusiasm and will work hard to ensure these results are delivered as quickly as possible.”

How do you find your polling place in Michigan?

Michigan voters can check their polling location online at the Michigan Voter Information Center.

Information includes the address and precinct number where registered voters can vote (some locations have more than one precinct), and a sample ballot.
