Storms with EF-3 tornadoes leave 11 injured and a trail of destruction in Oklahoma

A series of severe storms spawned multiple tornadoes in Oklahoma on Sunday, damaging homes across the state.

Preliminary reports indicate a total of five tornadoes occurred, three of which struck the Oklahoma City metro.

The hardest hit areas include SE Oklahoma City near SE 89th and Sooner, in Newcastle near the elementary school, in Choctaw near SE 44th and Triple X, in Harrah, and there are reports of severe damage in Blanchard.

The National Weather Service said preliminary results from the survey team rated the Harrah/Choctaw tornado as an EF-3 and the Newcastle tornado as at least EF-1. According to the NWS, analysis of tornado assessments is still ongoing.

Thousands of people in Oklahoma are without power as crews begin restoration work.

“As of 11:30 a.m., we have restored power to nearly 58% of customers who experienced an outage overnight,” OG&E said on social media.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department spoke with News 9 and confirmed 11 non-life-threatening injuries from the storms. Capt. Scott Douglas said six people were transported to the hard-hit area of ​​SE 89th and Sooner, and five others were transported from Choctaw near SE 44th and Triple X.

As of 1:00 p.m., no fatalities had been reported in Oklahoma from the Nov. 3 tornadic storms

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office said Harrah is under a curfew starting after dark. OCSO shared the news on social media, saying the area was dangerous due to debris and downed power lines and that it wanted to ensure property in damaged homes remained safe.

The News 9 Weather Team and Storm Trackers were out early Sunday morning monitoring conditions as multiple tornadoes were reported across Oklahoma.

Tornado warnings were issued for several counties including Oklahoma, Cleveland, McClain, Pottawatomie, Garvin, Grady, Stephens County and more.

There were also severe thunderstorms and flooding in many districts on Sunday night.

At least six people from Oklahoma City were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Damage reports:

At least one home was damaged by a tornado southwest of Tinker Airforce Base.

Damage was reported in several locations in southeast Oklahoma City.

Damage was also reported in Goldsby, Luther, Norman, Blanchard and Valley Brook.

Newcastle Elementary's roof is severely damaged and the roof of the building has been torn off.

ROAD CONDITIONS AND CLOSURES

All northbound lanes of I-35 are closed at NE 50th Street due to flooding. ODOT said motorists in the area should use extra caution and use I-235 as an alternate route.
