BAY CITY, Mich. (WNEM) – The election campaign continues to take center stage in Michigan as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined Democrats and “Wonder Woman” star Lynda Carter in Bay City for a campaign stop for Kristen McDonald-Rivet.

McDonald-Rivet is running against Paul Junge for Congressman Dan Kildee's 8th District seat.

With the Lafayette Bridge as a backdrop, the group said it was important to vote blue for Michigan's infrastructure.

Political experts say Michigan's 8th District should be very competitive, and on Friday, November 1, some of McDonald Rivet's allies told TV5 why voters should send them to Washington.

“Kristen is local. She is from the community. She gets it,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer declared her unwavering support for McDonald Rivet's campaign to become U.S. Representative for Michigan's 8th District.

Whitmer, McDonald Rivet and other Democrats were with Carter in Bay City near the Lafayette Bridge.

Thanks to federal and state funding, the bridge is being rebuilt.

“My focus has always been on what our community needs and wants. From the days I was on the Bay City Commission to my time in the State Senate, and that's exactly what I'll be doing in Washington. The people of our community in the heart of Michigan expect the government to take care of what matters most by repairing our bridges, supporting our schools, and making sure children get breakfast and lunch. “That’s always been my priority,” McDonald told Rivet.

According to Whitmer, 23,000 lane miles of road and 1,600 bridges were repaired across the state during her time as governor.

McDonald Rivet, for her part, is promising to follow in Kildee's footsteps to secure more federal funding for Michigan's infrastructure.

“We need to repair more bridges and more roads. But what I would tell you is that in the end you always need a rivet to build things,” McDonald Rivet said.

Carter said she was asked to come to Michigan by Whitmer, McDonald Rivet and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell.

Carter said she was honored to be here.

“I have always stood up for women and children. And you know, it's the strength that Michigan shows. And I want to defend myself against lies and fear. You know, I just want to push back against the ugly and bring joy and beauty. And if I can do even a tiny part of that, I’ll be grateful,” Carter said.

Carter also said Dingell, who represents Michigan's 6th District, is her children's godmother.

McDonald Rivet's challenger Boy will join Senate candidate Mike Rogers for a rally in Burton on Saturday, November 2nd.

The two will be at Trump Force 47 headquarters on S. Belsay Road.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the rally begins at 12 p.m. Click here to register.
