AJ Davis Injury Update: Rhett Lashlee gives SMU injury update after scary hit

1 minute, 21 seconds Read

SMU defender AJ Davis suffered a neck injury at the end of the first half as the Mustangs defeated Pitt 28-3. Head coach Rhett Lashlee was able to provide an update on his injury at the end of the first half, when his team was leading 31-3.

“We don’t know for sure. He moved everything, he was alert, so that’s a positive,” Lashlee said on the ACC Network. “Obviously he had neck pain, so they were just being extra careful. That’s all I know, so we’re very optimistic, but obviously pretty scary.”

Davis launched a kickoff coverage play and attempted to make a tackle. SMU got the ambulance pretty quickly and he was taken to a local hospital. His family was brought onto the field and Lashlee gathered his team after the game to calm them down after the scary scene.

Davis has recorded four tackles and one pass breakup in eight games for the Mustangs this season.

AJ Davis is a redshirt sophomore who prepped at Dallas (Tex.) Skyline and signed with the Mustangs in the 2022 class. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies, Davis was No. 103 overall cornerback in the country.
