8:30 a.m. Saturday: Widespread flooding risks may increase as heavy to moderate rainfall continues

Widespread flooding is not the greatest cause for concern, at least at the moment. However, that could change if moderate to heavy rainfall continues throughout the weekend.

The precipitation began just before sunrise Saturday morning, dropping an inch of rain in the KVOE rain gauge by 9:30 a.m. If you need to report rainfall totals, please text Bluestem Farm and Ranch's text line at 620-342-5863 or email [email protected].

The rains have already resulted in two flood-related warnings in the KVOE listening area, particularly in Chase County. Most of Chase is currently covered by a flood warning until 10 p.m., with the southwest corner of the county under a flood watch until 3:30 p.m.

There have been no reports of flooding in the county so far.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Sarah Teefey, there is currently no major concern about widespread flooding across the area, but that could change if rainfall continues at this pace over the next few days as expected.

In addition to the rainfall, isolated thunderstorms are now expected until Monday evening, although the risk of violent activity, which was previously a marginal category across the listening area, has reduced from Saturday morning. Teefey says precipitation and cloud cover have something to do with it.

Current forecasts still call for rainfall totals between 1 and 4 inches through Monday, with higher totals of 3 to 6 inches possible in the east-central portion of the state. Be sure to stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more weather updates as they become available.
