    The number of early voters in Michigan rises to 2.6 million

    LANSING — Early voting in Michigan ends in two days, but more than 730,000 people have already cast ballots in the statewide in-person election.

    If absentee voting is included, nearly 2.6 million of the state's more than 7 million registered voters have already cast their ballots before Election Day.

    Michigan began early in-person voting for most residents on October 26. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said 145,134 people voted that day, far exceeding the expectations of state and local election officials.

    With two days to go, Wayne County recorded 102,000 votes among counties with the most early voters, led by the city of Detroit with 25,252 early voters.

    When does early voting end?

    The early voting period began the second Saturday before Election Day, Oct. 26, and ends the Sunday before the election, Nov. 3, Michigan's secretary of state said.

    Detroit, Canton Township and East Lansing began early voting before Oct. 26. Detroit began early voting on October 19th, Canton Township and East Lansing began early voting on October 21st.

    However, municipalities were allowed to decide to set aside additional days for early voting. Under state law, communities can offer up to 28 days of early voting.

    How many people have voted in Michigan so far?

    As of October 31, there were 7,266,447 registered active voters. According to the Secretary of State, as of October 31, absentee voting and early voting in Michigan were as follows:

    • Returned mail-in ballots: 1,843,060
    • Personally tailored: 736,894
    • Total votes cast: 2,579,954

    Where did most people vote in person?

    As of October 31, here are the five counties where voters most often cast their ballots during early voting:

    • Wayne County: 102,052
    • Oakland County: 93,757
    • Macomb County: 70,971
    • Kent County: 57,079
    • Genesee County: 32,995

    As of Oct. 31, here are the five counties where voters returned their mail-in ballots the most:

    • Wayne County: 284,488
    • Oakland County: 281,740
    • Macomb County: 158,548
    • Kent County: 117,587
    • Washtenaw County: 84,993

    When is the 2024 presidential election?

    The general election will take place on November 5th. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m

    In order to vote on Election Day, you must vote in your assigned voting district.

    Would you like to vote by postal vote? You missed the deadline

    The last deadline for requesting absentee ballots was October 21st. You can still return ballots, but officials recommend doing so in person at your clerk's office or polling place.

    When will early and mail-in ballots be counted in Michigan?

    According to the Secretary of State, it takes time to securely process and count mail-in ballots.

    “To ensure timely results, many states allow clerks to process mail-in ballots a week or more before Election Day. For example, “Florida allows clerks to process mail-in ballots a month before an election,” the secretary of state noted.

    In Michigan, cities and towns with a population of 5,000 or more can set up an absentee voter counting center to process and tabulate absentee ballots between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on each of the eight days before an election

    Cities and towns, regardless of population size, can set up an AVCB to process and evaluate mail-in ballots on the Monday before an election between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m

    When will we know whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump won the election?

    Enough votes will almost certainly be counted to determine the winners. When the polls close, the results already received will be published. More will be added as returns are received from across the state.

    To find local election results, the Michigan Secretary of State has a list of local officials' websites.

    But no state can count every vote until election night, and results can change days or even weeks later.

    Votes counted after Election Day include votes from military personnel and individuals living abroad, whose completed absentee ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by their local clerk within six days of the election.

    How to find a sample ballot in Michigan

    In most cases, you can view a sample ballot on your county clerk's website. Which races are on your ballot depends on where you live. To view your sample ballot, go to the election website for your area and enter your address. Michigan's Secretary of State also offers a look at your ballot.
