WICHITA, Kan. (Catch It Kansas) – In Week 9 of the high school football season in Kansas, the postseason began and half of the state's teams saw their seasons end. The first round of the playoffs featured a few surprises, but for the most part the top teams in each division showed off how to flex their muscles as their path to postseason glory continues.

WEEK 9 SUMMARY

MATCH OF THE WEEK:

Hays 31, Andover 0

Andover's turnaround season ends disappointingly in a tough road battle. The Trojans see their overall successful 2024 season come to an end with a record of 4:5. Hays, one of Kansas' battle-tested teams, improves to 6-3 and will face top seed and Western Athletic Conference foe Great Bend next Friday.

McPherson 41, Abilene 20

The Bullpups emerged from a battle with two 4A teams that we typically see late in the playoffs. The game was close at the start, but McPherson took control and prevailed in the 8-9 match. The Bullpups, 54, now face top-seeded Wamego, which is 8-1.

Hesston 43, Goodland 34

Looking for an upset and to extend the season, the Goodland Cowboys took a long road trip to face Hesston, ranked second on the West Side in Class 3A. The Cowboys, seeking their first playoff win in 20 years, narrowly failed to make their dream come true. The loss ends the high school career of five-star recruit Linkon Cure, considered by some to be the best tight end in the country at the prep level. Next season, Cure will play for Kansas State University.

Corn 37, Washburn Rural 21

Maize's remarkable turnaround continues as the Eagles are now 5-4 after starting the season 0-4. Maize built a 28-7 lead Friday night at Washburn Rural, while a minor horse on the West Side of Class 6A can now look toward another road fight next week in unbeaten Manhattan.

Mais Süd 56, Salina Central 35

Maize South righted the ship at the perfect time after losing its final three games of the regular season. The Mavericks dominated early and held off Salina Central in an impressive first-round victory. Maize South, 6-3, will face second-place Eisenhower on the road next week. The Tigers, ranked second on the west side of the Class 5A bracket, have a record of 7-2.

Collegiate 62, Colby 0

The Spartans were dominant from start to finish, going 8-1 and reaching the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. Next week, Collegiate will try to knock off defending champion Cheney for the second time this season. The Spartans were dominant at 8-1 in a 31-7 win over the Cardinals two weeks ago.
