The weekly Mega Millions buy nets Michigan man a $5 million prize

LANSING, MI – A special set of numbers and a weekly routine helped a Farmington Hills man recently win a $5 million Mega Millions jackpot.

“I play Mega Millions once a week and I always play this series of numbers made up of special dates,” said Tyrone Fergerson, 53. “I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to check my ticket. I said a prayer and then looked up the winning numbers. I recognized her immediately and was speechless when I saw that I had won not $1 million, but $5 million! All I can say is this win is incredible and I feel humbled and grateful!”

Fergerson matched all five white numbers drawn (01-06-10-23-27) in the September 24 drawing to win a $1 million prize. However, he also chose to play the Megaplier option, which was 5x that night, increasing his winnings to $5 million.

“Learning in the middle of the night that you have won $5 million is exactly what lottery players dream of, and for Mr. Fergerson it has become a reality,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “Congratulations to Tyrone, Michigan’s newest millionaire thanks to the Michigan Lottery’s Mega Millions game!”

Fergerson purchased his winning ticket at the Chill Box Convenience Store at 29801 West 9 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. With his winnings, Fergerson says he plans to take care of his family.

The last Michigan player to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot was lottery club Breakfast Club, which won an $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.

And even though they were lucky winners, it's smart for players to check their tickets immediately because a $1 million Mega Millions winner sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state's school aid fund.
