Cardi B, of “WAP” fame, plans to campaign for Vice President Harris amid weak Latino support

Afro-Latinx rapper Cardi B will campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday in a last-minute appeal to Latino voters.

Just days before the presidential election, Latino voters have been thrust into the national spotlight after a comedian called Puerto Rico an island of “trash” at former President Donald Trump's rally in New York City. President Joe Biden then sparked controversy when he appeared to use the term in reference to Trump's supporters, although the White House and Harris have both denied that he had made such a connection.

Harris' popularity among Latinos recently fell to “dangerously low levels,” the New York Times wrote this month. The publication partnered with the Siena College Research Institute for a poll that found Trump is gaining ground among Latinos, a demographic that has historically leaned Democratic.

The Harris campaign website describes her “Opportunity Economy” proposal as an initiative to “equip Latino men with more tools and opportunities.” It adds that the plan will “more than double the number of Latin American first-time homeowners each year, to nearly 600,000.”

Cardi B, known for her sexually explicit hit “WAP,” will perform at Harris' rally on Friday in the battleground state of Wisconsin. The rapper previously stated that she wouldn't support either candidate while Biden was still running, telling Rolling Stone: “I don't know what she wants. Fuck you both,” in reference to any presidential candidate.

The rapper also said in May that the US had been “betrayed” under Biden's presidency. She admitted that she had experienced “multi-layered disappointments” due to the high cost of living and low wages, with no progress being made in addressing the perceived problems.

Cardi B is joined by her biological cousin and fellow rapper GloRilla, who rose to prominence after her 2022 single “FNF” became popular on TikTok. She collaborated with Cardi B on “Tomorrow 2.”

Other musical acts at the rally include DJ Gemini Gilly, Flo Milli, The Isley Brothers and MC Lyte. Harris boasted support from major musical talents such as Megan Thee Stallion, Eminem, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and John Legend throughout her campaign.

Trump will also visit the Badger State on Friday. He battled alongside former Packers quarterback Brett Favre in Green Bay earlier this week.
