SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – As deer hunting season begins in Louisiana, the governor is asking hunters to donate some or all of their harvest to families in need this holiday season.

For families experiencing food insecurity, protein can often be the most expensive and difficult source of nutrition to obtain. Hunters play a crucial role here.

Governor Landry, in collaboration with the National Rifle Association (NRA), declared November as Wild Meat Donation Month in Louisiana to “promote and protect the future of hunting” and “use it as a source of food, a right and an important tool for the… Promote wildlife management”. .'

The press release states that the proclamation encourages hunters to donate excess wild meat to local organizations, such as Hunters for the Hungry (H4H), that help those in need. It also invites non-hunters to consider supporting the initiative financially.

Participating locations in Northwest Louisiana include:

  • In Bienville, Wild Thang Custom Meats,

  • In Bossier, Bellevue Meat Processing;

  • In Caddo, Cotten's Grocery Store;

  • In Natchitoches, K&B Farms & Arms and Demory & Coleman Butcher Shop

H4H notes that some processors require that the deer and pigs be slaughtered in the field, while others will do the skinning for you.

“We hope this month serves as a reminder of the important role hunting plays in the community and the responsibility we share as a sportsman’s paradise,” said Madison Sheahan, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

According to the press release, hunters can drop off their deer or hogs for free at any processor participating in the H4H program. The food bank or other local agency collects the meat from the processor for distribution and the processor's invoice is sent to H4H.
