ORLANDO, Fla. — The city of Orlando is considering a sweeping new security measure downtown after a deadly shooting early Friday morning.

Commissioner Shan Rose, District 5, told News 6 that the city is deciding to close off a large portion of downtown and only allow access in one location.

“We have been working with the businesses and some downtown residents to explore options for access to a complete, coordinated access point,” Rose said.

Rose said the safety measure will be implemented on weekends and during special events such as Halloween.

She said people entering the area would be checked for weapons and required to scan their identification cards.

She said the plan wasn't foolproof, but it would deter revelers who come downtown to cause trouble.

The City of Orlando implemented a similar security measure in 2022, although there were multiple entry points in implementing this plan.

“There were some issues with the structure of the program,” she said. “Now we are working with the companies to get full buy-in from the companies so that it is a fully coordinated collaboration.”

Rose told News 6 that a decision on the possible new security measure is imminent and could come in the next few days.

The shooting early Friday, as many celebrated Halloween, left two people dead, six others injured and another person trampled and injured.

Jaylen Edgar was arrested in connection with the shooting, the motive of which is not yet known.
