Garrett Wilson TD Catch becomes an iconic copy of Michael Jordan's Nike logo

3 minutes, 28 seconds Read

Move over, Michael Jordan. The New York Jets and social media are suggesting that Garrett Wilson may be the new Jumpman.

Wilson is the Jets' wide receiver who caught a great, bouncing, one-handed touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers on Thursday night that made him look like Jordan in his prime.

And Jordan's logo at its peak.

The catch you'll see often

Let's start with the fact that the catch was great. It happened in New York, so your first instinct is to compare it to Odell Beckham's famous catch a decade ago.

“Garrett, he’s different and the recovery there was Odell’s,” Jets offensive lineman Morgan Moses said. “I'm not going to say it was better than Odell's, but I really had to analyze Odell's again, you know what I'm saying.”

“But he was a great catcher.”

After an immediate replay challenge by Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich, it was ruled a touchdown. Wilson received a shin and a foot inbound, which apparently equates to two feet.

It was poetry in motion.

Ballet on the football field.

But what makes this moment memorable and perhaps even iconic is its uncanny resemblance to Michael Jordan's Nike logo.

Garrett Wilson Incredible catch

No, Wilson didn't start from the foul line and dunk a basketball uncontested in a 1980s dunk contest.

He reached for a pass thrown inaccurately by Aaron Rodgers, fought off a defender, caught the ball with one hand and then figured out how to somehow stay in the field.

And despite all that, the resemblance to Jordan's logo is uncanny. That cannot be denied. It took about ten seconds on social media to recognize Wilson's catch, and Jordan's logo, if looked at from the right angle, could be associated with that, if not actual twins.

And after that, the players realized the same thing.

Wilson gives Adidas a Nike look

Fellow Jets receiver Davante Adams watched replays of the game in the stadium and then again on his phone in the locker room.

“I told him he might get kicked out of Adidas after this,” Adams, a Nike spokesman, said of his teammate as an Addidas spokesman. “He looked like he went to see Jumpman with me.

“I'll talk to some people about it, but I'm not saying they're going to replace the logo, and I know Mike (Michael Jordan) might not like me saying that, but that was a tough snag and I I just saw it about three minutes ago too.

In his typical team-first approach, Wilson didn't immediately view his play as a memorable moment — and certainly not a catch of the Mona Lisa that should be hung in the NFL's Lourve archives.

“I thought, 'I hope one counts, I hope this isn't one of those where I have to be like what if,'” Wilson said. “But I'm glad it was like that. All my teammates did that. I was just happy that I can play for my teammates. They trust me, they believe in me, they give me hope. I'm just glad I can make it a game for my teammates.

Garret Wilson: Making a play

Yeah, okay, this could be a game for the ages and Wilson is talking about making a game for his teammates. I love him, I really do.

So what's next?

Well, you will definitely see the play again and again. And over and over again.

The suggestion here is to stay away from ESPN on Friday or you'll be bombarded with this hook.

But soon the marketing people will get their hands on it. Guaranteed.

Adidas will do it, because now they have an obvious answer to Nike's Jumpman. And it wouldn't be a surprise if Nike waited for Wilson's contract to expire to add him and his wild catch to its talent roster.

You won't soon forget this catch.
