The New York Jets are 2-6 heading into a Week 9 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Houston Texans. A trade for Davante Adams hasn't changed the season, with two losses since the deal, including last week's fourth-quarter loss to the New England Patriots.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who joined the team in a trade in the 2023 offseason, missed all but a few games last year after suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon injury and never recovered. He is on pace to set a career-high in interceptions and a career-low in completion percentage and passer rating this year.

Rodgers signed a three-year, $112.5 million contract with the Jets following the trade in April 2023. Here's what you should know about the deal, including its trading potential.

Can the Jets trade Aaron Rodgers?

Rodgers' contract contains a no-trade clause. This means he can only be traded to a team that approves of him and is willing to waive this clause. If he doesn't agree to a potential deal, New York can't move forward with it.

Aaron Rodgers contract details

Here are the full details of his contract with details from Spotrac:

2024

  • Cap hit: $17.1 million
  • Dead cap: $66.1 million

2025

  • Cap hit: $23.5 million
  • Dead cap: $49 million

There are four invalid years attached to the end of the contract from 2026 to 2029. Due to the no-trade clause, there are no details regarding dead money or cap hits due to trades. Should a deal be made, Jets and Rodgers representatives would need to work out those details at that time.

Has an NFL player exercised a no-trade clause?

Yes. Then-Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr refused to waive his no-trade clause before the 2023 offseason. With that, Las Vegas opted to release him in February to avoid paying more than $40 million in guaranteed money to its longtime quarterback. He ended up signing with the New Orleans Saints.

The Seattle Seahawks had reportedly completed a deal to trade their Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson to the Philadelphia Eagles for Jalen Hurts ahead of the 2022 NFL scouting combine. Wilson did not agree to this and the deal did not go through.

The Eagles publicly supported Hurts as their starting quarterback and made it to the Super Bowl the following season. Wilson was traded to Denver a month later and spent two disappointing seasons there before being released and signing with Pittsburgh.
