Pixel phones will get a real weather app with some AI in 2024

An AI weather report, enhanced for reading

Customizable, but also not

At the top of the weather stack is an eye-catching “AI-generated weather report” that is a combination of summary and familiarity. “Cold and rainy day, bring your umbrella and hold on to your hat!” is Google's example; I cannot provide another one because an update to “Gemini Nano” is pending.

Weather radar map from the Google Weather app.

You can view the weather radar for your location as well as the forecast movement of precipitation. The app provides “nowcasting” precipitation estimates, such as “Rain will last 2 hours” or “Light rain in 10 minutes.”

Widgets with weather data, including UV Index 2, sunrise and sunset times, visibility and air quality, displayed as reorderable widgets.

The best feature you'll find in the version of Weather that came with the Pixel Tablet and Fold is that you can change the order of the data displayed on your weather screen. I set the UV index, humidity, sunrise/sunset and wind conditions as high as my setup allowed. This is a trade-off because the Weather app's data widgets are so large that scrolling is required to get a full picture of a day, and you don't move up the AI summary or 10-day forecast can. But if you just need a few numbers and like a verbal summary, it's handy.

If you have allergies and are not in the UK, Germany, France or Italy, unfortunately Google cannot provide you with pollen data or forecasts. Unfortunately there is no frog either.

Google's weather app isn't doing so well with Play Store reviewers. Users are annoyed that they can't see a location's weather without adding it to their saved locations list. that other Google apps, including the At a Glance app in each Pixel's default launcher, redirect you to the Google app summary instead of this app; the appearance of the weather map; and above all, that it does not appear in the app list of some phones, but only as a widget.
