Dodgers vs. Yankees: Los Angeles wins 8th World Series title after New York's complete self-destruction

6 minutes, 33 seconds Read

For the second time in five seasons and the first time in a full season since 1988, the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series champions. It took a supremely ugly Game 5 to get them there. You will enjoy it with a sip of champagne.

The Dodgers entered Wednesday's game with a 3-1 series lead, but perhaps more than just nerves after a tough loss to the New York Yankees in Game 4, and fell behind 5-0 before a Chaotic comeback put the Commissioner's Trophy in his hands with a 7-6 victory.

It's a win that few observers expected early in the postseason, even for one of the most talented lineups in baseball. With an injury-plagued rotation, the Dodgers overwhelmed their opponents on offense and got just enough quality pitching to make it work.

Freddie Freeman, who won a record four straight games to open the Fall Classic, was named the deserving World Series MVP after the game.

The Yankees would have become the first team in World Series history to force a Game 6 after a 3-0 deficit. They started early in Game 5 when Aaron Judge broke his postseason demons with a two-run homer in the first and the Yankees scored another hit when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back homers.

It was a rough start for the Dodgers' Jack Flaherty, who was more than solid in Game 1 but exited Wednesday after 1 1/3 innings with four earned runs. A home run by Giancarlo Stanton off Ryan Brasier gave the team a five-run lead in the third inning.

Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole did exactly what the Yankees paid him to do. He pitched four hitless innings to open the game and then, well, it came to the fifth inning.

A series of three major defensive errors tied the game, with the Dodgers scoring five unearned runs as Yankee Stadium went from raucous to stunned. First, Judge dropped a light flying ball. Second place went to Anthony Volpe, who hurled a throw to third while trying to take the lead. Third went to Gerrit Cole, who refused to cover first base due to a routine grounder.

The Yankees took the lead in the sixth inning on a Stanton Sacrifice fly, but the Dodgers took it back in the seventh inning after Tommy Kahnle loaded the bases with no outs. Another error followed when Austin Wells' interference from a catcher gave Shohei Ohtani a free base, and a pair of sacrifice flies then provided the winning runs.

After losing by five runs, the Dodgers moved into World Series winning position, and that was almost entirely thanks to the Yankees. Blake Treinen pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to take the lead into the ninth, and then Walker Buehler, the Dodgers' likely starter in Game 7, closed out a game that would make Yankees fans sick for years to come .

New York had a chance to make history by simply sending the series back to Los Angeles and instead watching MLB's other juggernaut celebrate a World Series in the Bronx.

  • The Dodgers parade begins at 11 a.m. Friday and ends with an event at Dodger Stadium.

  • The Dodgers didn't get a save after their win in 2020. This one will be different.

  • Freddie Freeman is your 2024 World Series MVP

He opened the Fall Classic with a record four straight games with a home run and had another key RBI tonight. There was no other choice than the Dodgers first baseman.

  • Another one of the greatest seasons in baseball history.

  • Walker Buehler has something to say.

  • Did Juan Soto just play his last game in a Yankees uniform?

Juan Soto almost certainly made some money this offseason. The only question is whether the Yankees will be the ones to give it to him. After Ohtani's $700 million deal, Soto's free agency is considered the second most lucrative in MLB history, and factoring in inflation from the Dodgers star's moves, it could be worth even more.

The Yankees and Mets are considered the biggest natural suitors for Soto, but earlier this week it was reported that the Dodgers were interested. It will be expensive for the Yankees to bring this team back.

  • Shohei Ohtani is a World Series champion

He didn't accomplish much in the World Series, but Shohei Ohtani helped get the Dodgers there. He is now a World Series champion, a Japan Series champion and a World Baseball Classic champion.

Arguably the most talented player in baseball history now has the one big thing that was missing from his resume, and joining a Dodgers team that needed him was enough. His 2024 season will be legendary in Japan.

Oh yeah, and he can pitch next year.

  • This was Walker Buehler's first career save.

  • Final: Dodgers 7, Yankees 6

The Dodgers have officially won their eighth World Series title and their first since 2020.

  • Dodgers win the World Series

And that's enough! The Dodgers' win officially won the World Series 4-1.

  • Austin Wells strikes out swinging, and the Dodgers are just a hit away. Alex Verdugo is now in action for the Yankees.

  • Anthony Volpe singles out at third with one out in the ninth.

  • Walker Buehler is now on the mound here in the ninth game for the Dodgers.

  • Leiter struck out Edman, and then Smith grounded out to third to end the inning. The Yankees will reach the bottom of the ninth round with the World Series now on the line.

  • Kiké Hernandez was also just walked and Aaron Boone is on his way to the mound. Now Mark Leiter Jr. comes into the game to try to end the inning for the Yankees and limit their deficit to a single run.

  • Teoscar Hernandez just opened the ninth with a base hit, and Taylor is now ready to run for him and end the game in left field. Taylor just moved into second place after Weaver also tried to throw himself into first too many times.

  • Stanton flied out to right on the first pitch of his at-bat, and then Treinen struck out Anthony Rizzo to escape the inning.

The Dodgers are just three outs away from winning the World Series.

  • And Treinen was just walking with Jazz Chisholm. He's now reached 37 pitches with just one out in the eighth when Dave Roberts goes to the mound. Treinen will remain in the game for now.

  • Juan Soto singled in the first run of the inning, but Aaron Judge followed with a perfect double to left. The Yankees are in position to take the lead again here in the eighth.

  • Weaver only threw 13 pitches there, giving him a good chance to go 4-5-6 for the Dodgers in the top of the ninth.
