Winter storm warning issued for Thursday

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a winter storm warning for portions of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon.

The latest information on the storm is for snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.

Wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour will create dangerous driving conditions that could impact morning and early evening traffic on Thursday.

Despite the warm ground surfaces, snowfall rates of one inch per hour will still result in snowfall, particularly inland from Lake Superior.

High temperatures will only reach the mid 30s on Thursday, falling to the low 20s on Thursday evening. Temperatures will warm to the mid 40s Friday and low 50s by Saturday.

THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE:

Rain is expected to transition to snow from west to east on Thursday, bringing the first widespread accumulations of the season.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Twin Ports, along the I-35 corridor and east across much of northwest Wisconsin, where 1 to 4 inches is possible, with locally higher values ​​possible in central to southern Douglas County.

Large accumulations are not expected in coastal areas along Lake Superior.

The area with the greatest chance for snow accumulation has moved east, and winter weather advisories have been expanded to include Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, Ashland and Iron counties.
