The worst floods in Spain's history hit “like a tsunami” | World News

In the town of Algemesi, the floods are said to have occurred without warning.

Barrels of water pour down the street, bringing with them thick, smelly mud that covers every visible surface.

As we slosh through the slippery mud, we meet Bernardo trying to sweep him out of his house.

No matter how much he scrubs and cleans, the floors remain full of dirt.

“The catastrophe is enormous, I have never seen anything like it in my entire life,” he says.

He estimates some of the homes were filled with nearly two meters of water.

Nursing home inundated by floods in Spain

Many are now without power after flooding affected electrical systems.

For most of the day, residents tried to repair the damage. But as we walk through the city, snapshots can still be seen.

What caused the floods in Spain?

He estimates about half of the city's vehicles were damaged.

And the misery is not limited to Algemesi – it is a pain that is repeated in communities across southeastern Spain.
