This year's Halloween costume should probably include a rain jacket or umbrella for anyone heading outside to trick-or-treat in the Willamette Valley.

Constant and occasionally heavy showers are forecast across western Oregon throughout Thursday and into the evening hours.

“It looks wet,” said Andy Bryant, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Portland. “We are forecasting lots of showers. Now showers mean there will be some breaks in the rain, and there may be some breaks. But there will also be a lot of rain.”

Bryant said there is also a risk of thunderstorms, most likely in the central or southern Willamette Valley.

“The chance of thunderstorms is about 20%,” he said. “If you are outside and see lightning or hear thunder, that is a good time to go inside and wait for things to calm down.”

Overall, about a quarter to a half inch of rain is forecast for Thursday night, which is quite a bit. Between 0.5 and 1 inch is possible on Thursday.

Bryant said he couldn't identify any period that might be drier than others.

“Honestly, I don’t see an optimal time in this late afternoon and evening window,” he said. “It might not get quite as cold as you get closer to 5 p.m.”

Temperatures are expected to rise around 50 degrees and then drop later in the evening, but not significantly. It's also likely to be windy, with winds between 8 and 15 mph, with guests experiencing speeds of up to 24 mph.

Bryant said, “Parents and children should be prepared for rain and stay or go inside if they see lightning or hear thunder.”
