Multiple weather systems are creating a frightening forecast across most of the U.S. as people head out trick-or-treating on Halloween night. For some, multiple layers and winter coats are necessary in addition to children's Halloween costumes, while for others, record warmth is possible.

On Halloween night, a severe low pressure system will move across the Great Lakes and a dangerous cold front will move across the Midwest, the lower Mississippi Valley and the western Gulf Coast. Ghouls and goblins may have to dodge a few raindrops early tonight in the Midwest and Mid-Mississippi Valley. These include Boos, Illinois, and Black Cat, Ark.

Rain showers and thunderstorms will affect most people in the Great Lakes Valleys, Ohio and Tennessee, and the western Gulf Coast. Cities where a wet night is likely include Devils Elbow, Mich., Dead Man's Crossing, Ind., Bloody Corners, Ohio, Transylvania Beach, Ky., Screamer, Tenn., Bloody Springs, Miss., Treat, La. and Chocolate Bayou, Texas.

It will be a wild night in far northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula as temperatures will be cold enough for light to moderate wet snow or a rain/snow mix. New snow accumulation that falls during trick-or-treating will be minimal. However, the snow from earlier in the day could be up to 10 to 20 cm in places! In these places you may need to pair your Halloween costumes with snow boots, for example in Witch Lake, Michigan.

Another low pressure area lurks over the northwest. Rain showers will drench all witches and warlocks in the lower elevations of the Northwest, Northern California and the Northern Rocky Mountains. In the meantime it will snow at higher altitudes. However, if at all, predominantly small accumulations are to be expected. Wet snow is forecast for places like Witch Hazel, Oregon, Devils Ladder, Idaho, and Devils Den, Wyo.

It will be eerily quiet for vampires and monsters to collect their candy for the desert southwest, most of the plains, and the east coast. Calm weather awaits towns like Death Valley, Calif., Pumpkin, Texas, Screamer, Alabama, Pumpkintown, N.C., Spook Hill, Md., Skull Run, W.Va., Bloody, NH and Deadmans Corner, Maine.

Terribly cold weather is expected for much of the nation. Temperatures generally range from 30 to 40 degrees from the Northwest, Great Basin and Rocky Mountains to the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Widespread 20s will send shivers down the spines of those in the higher elevations of the Mountain West. These cold temperatures will be experienced in places like Devils Slide, Utah, Spook City, Colorado, Pumpkin Center, SD, Casper, Wyo. and Devils Gap, Nebraska.

Put on extra layers or bring a jacket if you're in California, the central plains, or the rest of the Midwest. Temperatures will drop into the 50s and lower 60s, including in Slaughterville, Oklahoma,

Temperatures will be milder for candy gathering for the desert southwest into the southern plains and throughout the eastern United States. Temperatures here should be between 60 and 70 degrees if you're traveling at night, including places like Tombstone, Ariz., Slaughter Beach, Del., Deadman Landing, Fla., Skullhead, Ga., Spiderweb, SC, Goblintown, Va., Hershey, Pennsylvania and Sleepy Hollow, NY
