NEW YORK – The New York Yankees say the fans who did it ejected due to malfunction while Game 4 of the World Series are not eligible for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

The Yankees said in a statement that fans “will not be permitted to attend tonight's game in any capacity.”

Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts.

The safety of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of every event at Yankee Stadium and must not be compromised.

Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want the passion of our fans to shine through. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but exuberance in supporting your team should never cross the line and intentionally put players at physical risk.

The Yankees and Major League Baseball have a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend today's game in any way.

In the first inning of Tuesday's game, Yankees slugger Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball to right field, but Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts reached over the wall and made the catch. A fan sitting in the front row and wearing a Yankees away jersey grabbed Betts' gloved hand with both hands and yanked the ball out, while a second fan grabbed his non-gloved hand.

Torres was taken to task over fan interference and a video of the incident quickly went viral on social media. The Yankees said two fans were escorted from the stadium and ejected.

“When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn’t matter,” Betts told reporters after the game. “We lost. That is irrelevant. I'm doing well. He's fine. Everything is cool. We lost the game and that’s kind of what I’m focused on. We have to turn the tide and prepare for tomorrow.”

This wasn't Torres' first shot marred by fan interference this series. With two outs in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger StadiumHe hit a fly ball to left field, and a fan reached out and caught it.

The Yankees hope to keep their championship dreams alive and send the series back to Los Angeles for Games 6 and 7. They trail 3-1 heading into Game 5, but are coming off a big win at home Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam and won 11-4.

Game 5 begins Wednesday at 8:08 p.m. at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. See the full schedule And What you should know about getting there.
