Experts say when Hurricane Patty could form next week

The latest update on Hurricane Patty has good and bad news. The good news is that last week's prediction that it could form between October 30th and November 2nd has been pushed back. The results of several hurricane models for today, October 30, predict that a tropical storm or hurricane could develop in the Caribbean by next week, but other trackers have lowered the risk of that happening. Here's a breakdown of when Hurricane Patty could develop during the first week of November 2024.

When might Hurricane Patty develop?

According to the Canadian Hurricane Model (CMC), it is possible that Hurricane Patty could develop in the Caribbean off the east coast of Nicaragua. Accuweather says there is the potential for a tropical storm to develop in this region sometime between November 2nd and November 5th.

As meteorologist Brian Shields, better known on YouTube as Mr. Weatherman, explains, the CMC model says a low pressure system will move northwest toward Belize later this week. The German hurricane model (ICON) predicts the same thing, but assumes that only a tropical storm will develop. This is due to warm ocean temperatures in the Central American Gyre, which is active toward the end of the tropical season, in this case November.

On the other hand, both the American model (GFS) and the European model currently do not show a major risk of tropical storm development. Still, all four models show that there will be a lot of precipitation in Central America and the Caribbean and that the storms will hover over Puerto Rico long enough to cause possible flooding and mudslides.

Accuweather notes that storms in the Caribbean tend to be unpredictable in November and that controlling winds can shift a storm's path toward Florida if conditions are right. The tracking service is also monitoring a second region off the northeast coast of Haiti where the risk of possible tropical storm development is low.
