(KMAland) – Strong to severe storms are expected across much of KMAland later today.

The National Weather Service has classified much of southwestern Iowa and southeastern Nebraska as at slight risk for severe weather, with portions of northwestern Missouri at increased risk – with a 100 percent chance of storms developing in the risk area. Weather forecaster Kara Foster tells KMA News that the greatest risk for severe weather appears to be later in the afternoon and evening as cooler weather moves into the region.

“Across our area we see a marginal to slight risk – the main factors being wind influence, some hail and also a slight risk of tornadoes due to the amount of heat coming into this system and the speed at which this system is traveling.” “It will cool down in the afternoon,” Foster said. “That's why it's definitely a good idea to leave alarms of any kind on during the day and afternoon, especially until late in the evening.”

According to the weather service, severe storms are expected starting around 10 a.m., with the danger largely decreasing by 7 p.m. After a dry September and October, heavy rains are expected across much of the area, Foster said.

“We have the possibility of heavy rainfall with at least an inch of rainfall in most areas,” she said. “We'll probably see a few inches across much of the state as well, and in some isolated areas we could see three (inches), maybe even three and a half or four (inches), depending on how solid this system remains.”

While a few scattered showers could linger overnight, Foster says skies should clear for a partly cloudy and cooler Halloween on Thursday with highs in the mid-50s before sunny weather returns with highs in the upper 50s on Friday -years returns. The weather service expects that isolated showers could occur again late Friday evening. Stay tuned to KMA and kmaland.com for weather developments this evening.
