Exactly 30 years after the publication of Forrest GumpTom Hanks and Robin Wright are back together – alongside director Robert Zemeckis – for Herea single film that takes place entirely in one room and follows several generations of families.

In the project, Hanks and Wright play a couple whose relationship is followed over the years. At the AFI Fest premiere in Los Angeles on Friday, Hanks said collaborating now is “the exact same process” as it was in the '90s.

“We had the same conversation over and over again; we ran into each other every now and then. I have to say that on the very first day when we first sat down with our scripts to start breaking it down, there was a kind of “Can you believe this?” How did this happen?'” Hanks said The Hollywood Reporter the reunion with Wright. “But that was then, this is now, and we know better, so let's just start with the ease, the luxury of knowing each other inside out and with great, great trust and affection.”

The actor added that when he first signed on, he didn't know Wright would be his co-star; Zemeckis later began floating the idea, and “I said, 'Well, wouldn't that be great?' Then you have: Are we available? Can it work? All these other things are happening,” Hanks continued. “But we have a soft spot when it comes to working together: 'Yes, of course,' that's the only thing you say.”

Zemeckis reiterated that he had no grand plan for one Forrest Gump Reunion from the start, but it was “very, very happy” that both stars said yes. To track the actors across decades of history, the team worked with AI studio Metaphysic on a tool called Metaphysic Live, which produced facial swaps and anti-aging effects in real time in addition to the actors' performances.

“It was important to tell the story – we couldn't make the film five years ago, so it was very fortunate that this tool came along right when we needed it,” Zemeckis said, explaining it was basically taken to mean “digital make-up”. Plus, filming the scene allowed the cast to see themselves 20 or 30 years younger – rather than waiting for visual effects to be added later – and the filmmaker added: “You look at it and say, 'Oh, I got that.' '” “To be a little more nimble, I have to move a little faster, I have to raise my voice a little.” It was important for her to see it.”

Here hits theaters November 1st.
