Another storm threat could be brewing in the Caribbean as this historically brutal Atlantic basin hurricane season enters its final month later this week, forecasters say.

The season, which brought enormous damage – some estimates put the damage from Helene and Milton at nearly $100 billion – could face a new tropical threat from the western and central Caribbean, AccuWeather said. Rainfall forecast in the Caribbean this week could lead to life-threatening conditions such as flash floods and mudslides – regardless of whether the disturbance is nicknamed a “tropical storm” or not.

Water temperatures in the mid-80s, a few degrees warmer than usual for the season, may help intensify the disturbances, Alex DaSilva, senior hurricane expert at AccuWeather, told USA TODAY. Two possible disturbances provide a “high probability” of a tropical depression or storm forming in these waters in early November, he said.

“The water temperatures are very warm and we expect the wind shear to be somewhat weaker,” said DaSilva. “So I think something will develop.”

The good news is that storms tend to spread offshore at this time of year. But one of the storms could reach Florida and the Carolinas, he said.

“That's certainly in play, but we're talking about Election Day, 10 to 14 days from now,” he said. “Still way out there, but we’ll be watching.”

Ryan Truchelut, WeatherTiger meteorologist and USA TODAY Network contributor, says the 2024 hurricane season, which began June 1, is also the first since 2005 in which Florida recorded three hurricane landfalls, two of which were Category 3 or higher . Helene and Milton are unusual storms with “few historical precedents,” he says.

“Quite simply, we are tired,” says Truchelut. “The 2024 hurricane season has hit us harder than any other in a generation.”

The Northeast should enjoy fantastic weather for candy collecting – warm and dry. Records are being “broken or challenged” across the region, DaSilva told USA TODAY. The forecast high temperature for Boston is 78 degrees, New York could reach 75 degrees on Halloween and 80 degrees in Philadelphia.

“It looks like the center of the country, the Plains states, will be dry,” DaSilva said. But, he said, a cold front moving east could bring the threat of showers and thunderstorms from Ohio and Michigan down to Louisiana and Texas.

The Central Plains, Rocky Mountains and Southeast will be dry, he said. But a storm system targeting the Pacific Northwest could mean “breezy and harsh” weather with cool weather and periods of rain.
