    CINCINNATI – All in all, the Eagles will be happy to accept a 10-10 halftime tie against the Cincinnati Bengals as Jalen Hurts scored from the 1-yard line with 22 seconds left in the second quarter.

    That's because the defense couldn't stop Joe Burrow and the Bengals' offense. And the Eagles continued their losing streak by failing to score in the first quarter, but they ended a losing streak by finally scoring on their first possession.

    Confused?

    Well, the Eagles defense allowed Burrow and the Bengals offense an opening drive that lasted 10 minutes and 4 seconds.

    When the offense touched the ball, there were 4:50 left in the quarter. The Eagles ended up scoring a field goal on the drive, but not until the end of the first quarter. Jake Elliott scored the goal after 39 minutes with 14:10 minutes left in the second quarter.

    But the Eagles couldn't slow down Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. He completed 11 of his 12 passes on the first drive and went 16 of 24 for 169 yards in the first half. The Bengals converted their first seven third-down opportunities.

    Still, the Eagles managed to tie the game by holding the ball for almost the entire final 5 minutes and 8 seconds of the first half, with Hurts scoring on a tush push with 22 seconds left.

    It turned out to be the Eagles' best defense, as the Bengals used every timeout on this drive. Hurts' 19-yard pass to Grant Calcaterra brought the Eagles to the Bengals' 29 yards. Then, on 3rd-and-16 from the 33rd, Hurts hit AJ Brown for 17 yards, setting up the eventual TD.

    Hurts was 7 of 11 for 86 yards while Brown had 3 catches for 55 yards. Saquon Barkley had 35 yards on 9 carries.

    The Eagles defense turned things around in the second half, allowing just one touchdown. But the Eagles stopped the Bengals on a 4th-and-1 from Cincinnati's 39 when Ja'Marr Chase lost 2 yards on a pass to the flat.

    Then CJ intercepted Gardner-Johnson Burrow trying to hit Chase deep early in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Rodgers had coverage and passed the pass to Gardner. It was just the Eagles' third takeaway of the season, the fewest in the NFL.

    DeVonta Smith goes deep, Eagles regain the lead, 24-17

    It was a frustrating day for DeVonta Smith. He had just three catches for 24 yards before hauling in a 45-yard pass from Jalen Hurts with 2:43 left in the third quarter. Smith also had just one catch for minus-2 yards.

    So Smith was pretty excited when he caught the ball over the Bengals' Jordan Battle.

    The Eagles took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards down the field. Hurts completed a 15-yard pass to DeVonta Smith, then 28 yards to Grant Calcaterra and to the Bengals' 22-yard pass.

    Hurts capped the drive with a 7-yard QB keeper. That gave Hurts 47 career touchdowns, surpassed only by Steve Van Buren's 69.

    The Eagles continued their seven-game scoreless streak in the first quarter, but that wasn't entirely the offense's fault. That's because the Bengals had a 10:04 drive to start the game. The Eagles touched the ball for the first time with 4:50 minutes left and immediately pushed down the field.

    They reached the Bengals' 16th with a minute left in the quarter, but the period ended after a holding penalty. The Eagles settled for a 39-yard field goal with 14:10 left in the second quarter.

    The Eagles have ended a losing streak: It's the first time they've scored on an opening drive this season.

    ESPN reported that the Eagles have failed to score in eight consecutive first quarters since 2023, marking the longest streak in the past five seasons.

    The Bengals took the opening kickoff and moved methodically down the field. They covered 70 yards in 17 plays, taking 10 minutes and 4 seconds to do so. Joe Burrow capped the drive with a 2-yard TD pass to Ja'Marr Chase. Overall, Burrow was 11 of 12 on the drive for 60 yards.

    The Bengals also converted on all five of their third-down attempts.

    The Eagles had already ruled out tight end Dallas Goedert, who missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury, and right guard Mekhi Becton, who is out with a concussion. Tyler Steen will start in place of Becton.

    The other inactives are QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks and G Trevor Keegan.

    That means rookie WR Ainias Smith, who just came off injured reserve, is on the game day roster.

    The Bengals will be without one of their star wide receivers, Tee Higgins, who apparently suffered a quadriceps injury during practice on Friday. Higgins had 341 yards in five games. The Bengals have Ja'Marr Chase, who leads the NFL with 620 yards receiving.

    An intriguing subplot of Sunday's Eagles-Bengals game is the possibility of Eagles safety Sydney Brown facing off against his identical twin brother, Bengals running back Chase Brown.

    That didn't happen in the first half. Sydney Brown didn't play in the first half.

    The two have never played against each other. They grew up in London, Ontario, Canada, attended high school in Bradenton, Florida, and then attended college together in Illinois.

    At Illinois, the two competed against each other in offense and defense drills until the coaches put a stop to it.

    “It’s the competitive nature that we have with each other and the type of relationship that we have with each other,” Sydney Brown said. “That’s what got us to where we are now.”
