Illini heads to Ole Miss for exhibition game

Illinois has its final preseason before the regular season on Sunday, traveling to Oxford to face No. 24 Ole Miss in a benefit game (11 a.m. CT, SEC Network). Net proceeds from the game will benefit CASA of North Mississippi.

Illinois began the preseason with a shutout against Butler on Oct. 13 in Champaign.

Illinois sits just outside the top 25 in the preseason AP poll and receives the most points (92) among unranked teams. Meanwhile, the Illini came in at No. 24 in the preseason coaches poll.

Illinois is coming off another strong season under its head coach Brad Underwoodwhich compiled a record of 29-9, marking the third winningest season in program history. Illinois won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament championship and reached the NCAA East regional final, marking the UI's first Elite Eight appearance since 2005. The Illini finished the year ranked No. 6 in the AP poll, their second top-10 finish in the final four years of the Underwood era.

Illinois has a completely different roster for the 2024-25 season and returns only one junior starter Ty Rodgersa second fellow in his second year Dra Gibbs Lawhornand a pair of walk-ons. Overall, Illinois is returning just 14.2% of its minutes, 9.6% of its points and 16.2% of its rebounds from last season.

But the coaching staff brought in talent from all areas to replenish the squad. Illinois brought in five Division I transfers – three of them from major conferences – and signed five newcomers – including three international recruits – for a total of 10 new players to its 14-man roster.

After having six seniors in the rotation last season, Illinois only has one senior on the graduate roster this year Ben Humrichous.

Illinois has been the winningest team in the Big Ten over the past five seasons, posting a league record of 69-31 while adding two conference tournament titles and totaling 75 wins over B1G teams during that span.
