What appeared to be a large brush fire burned in Salem, Massachusetts, late Saturday into early Sunday.

The fire burned on Highland Avenue. Flames could be seen in the forest, sending smoke into the surrounding area.

The flames appeared to be concentrated in a wooded area between Highland Avenue and Spring Pond, near the Lynn city limits.

Flames burned near homes in a condominium community on Olde Village Drive and residents were nervous as they waited for firefighters to arrive and put out the blaze.

Calls to the Salem Fire Department for information have so far been unsuccessful as all companies responded to the fire during the overnight hours.

There were no immediate signs that the fire, which breaks out as thousands of visitors flock to the city every day for Halloween celebrations, threatened structures.

High fire danger warnings have been issued in Massachusetts, with the state's fire department noting that critical fire conditions mean: “Any fires that develop may spread quickly and be difficult to extinguish.”
