Michigan topples No. 2 Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan men's soccer team secured its first top-five victory in 13 years with a 2-0 victory over second-place Maryland on Friday (Oct. 25) at UM Soccer Stadium.

Bryce Blevins Michigan led the way offensively, setting up the first goal and scoring the second on a penalty kick. Patrick O'Toole scored his first career goal to give the Wolverines the lead Matthew Fisher Adding a template to O'Toole's balance sheet. In the gate, Isaiah Goldson He posted a career-best nine saves, earning his fourth shutout of the season.

Maryland (8-2-5, 5-1-2 Big Ten) received a penalty kick in the sixth minute, but Goldson stopped the attempt and kept the game scoreless. Three minutes later, Blevins sent a well-placed ball into the box and found O'Toole, who headed it into the bottom corner, giving UM a 1-0 lead. The Terrapins took four of their next five shots, but none hit the target. Goldson made a second save in the 42nd minute, keeping the 1-0 lead until halftime.

After a handball in the penalty area, Blevins converted his second penalty try of the season, extending Michigan's lead to 2-0. Maryland regained control of possession, but Goldson held strong and stopped two point-blank shots in the 52nd minute, keeping the Terrapins scoreless. As the game passed the hour mark, Goldson continued his outstanding performance, making saves in the 66th, 67th and 74th minutes. Michigan (7-3-5, 2-3-4 Big Ten) controlled possession in the final 10 minutes, allowing just two shots to seal the victory for the Maize and Blue.

UM will conclude the regular season on Sunday, November 3rd when it travels to Madison, Wisconsin to face Wisconsin at 1:00 p.m. CDT.
