As Election Day approaches, US media companies are announcing their candidate picks for the 2024 presidential election. Compared to previous elections, there was less support in the news media this year: Only 80 media outlets supported Kamala Harris and fewer than 10 supported Donald Trump, Fox News reported. The latest American tabloid to announce its candidate selection is the New York Post, which calls the Republican candidate the “right choice.”

U.S. news media endorsements for the 2024 presidential election

Among the 80 endorsements for the Democratic candidate, some of the most notable are: Winston-Salem Chronicle, New York Times, Boston Globe, The New Yorker, Denver Post, The Las Vegas Sun, Los Angeles Sentinel, Seattle Times and The Star-Ledger, Tennessee Tribune, Scientific American and San Antonio Express. Media outlets supporting Trump include the New York Post, the Washington Times and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Post's endorsement of Trump comes just weeks after The New York Times declared its support for the vice president, calling her “the only patriotic choice for president.” “This clear, disheartening truth – Donald Trump is unfit to be president – should be enough for any voter who cares about the health of our country and the stability of our democracy to deny him re-election,” the board said outlets.

Meanwhile, the New York Post editorial board noted: “Trump is showing the same strength and drive as he did in 2016, despite the unprecedented and shameful weaponization of the justice system against him, two assassination attempts and the all-too-familiar constant barrage of hysterical media attacks on him. This year's media support is far lower than in the 2020 election: 14 newspapers support Trump and 120 support Joe Biden.

Recently, the Los Angeles Times caused controversy with its decision not to endorse either candidate in the November election. The media refrained from picking a side, even though it supported Barack Obama in 2008, Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020. Mariel Garza, the editor-in-chief of the LA Times, resigned Wednesday after the owner blocked an endorsement for Harris.
