The University of Michigan announced late Friday that it had launched a $7 billion fundraising campaign, the largest campaign in the university's history.

UM said it is also the largest known campaign target of a public university.

The campaign, called “Look to Michigan,” has already raised $3.3 billion during the campaign’s silent phase.

After the remainder of the campaign goal is met, the funds will be used toward the university's two strategic plans announced earlier this year, Vision 2034 and Campus 2050, and will also support the university's mission to serve the public through global impact in four areas.

UM said these areas include:

  • We are transforming the landscape of education by providing solutions to the shortage of prepared teachers, addressing resource disparities and providing opportunities for all who want to learn and succeed
  • Addressing pressing health issues, improving access and affordability, and creating discoveries to improve and save lives.
  • Strengthening democracy and civic engagement through community participation, critical thinking, and knowledge of democratic practices and principles.
  • Mitigating climate change through research and education.

“We know that the world calls on us to answer the most pressing questions of our time – to be the defining public institution that inspires all things possible,” UM President Santa Ono said in a statement. “The strongly collaborative, university-wide priorities of Vision 2034 were years in the making and laid the foundation for Michigan to become that institution. And the Look to Michigan campaign will bring this ambitious vision to life.”

UM's last fundraising campaign, Victors for Michigan, ran from 2013 to 2018 and raised $5.3 billion. Look to Michigan, UM's seventh fundraising campaign, is 32% more than its last campaign.

Funds raised will also support UM student experience, research and innovation, community engagement and partnerships, athletics, Michigan Medicine and the construction of state-of-the-art facilities in Ann Arbor and at the Dearborn and Flint campuses, officials said.

“Our leaders have laid out a bold new vision for UM that leverages our cross-functional expertise and excellence at scale and demonstrates our ability to innovate and serve the public good,” Tom Baird, vice president of development, said in a statement. “All of this is made possible through the philanthropic support of our generous donors, who have helped sustain our great university for more than 200 years and continue to move us forward in this exciting new chapter.”
