Instant Recap: Oklahoma State falls to Baylor to extend losing streak to five

2 minutes, 34 seconds Read

Oklahoma State won't win a football game for at least 48 days.

The Cowboys lost 38-28 to Baylor on Saturday in Waco. It was OSU's fifth straight loss, as the Cowboys are 3-5, still winless in Big 12 play and haven't won since Sept. 21 against Tulsa. The five-game losing streak ties the longest of Mike Gundy's head coaching career, as OSU lost five straight games during Gundy's first season as coach in 2005 and again in 2014.

OSU's fifth straight loss was similar to its previous four defeats, as the team struggled to move the ball on the floor on defense and offense. The Cowboys gave up 565 total yards to the Bears, who averaged 387.1 per game entering Saturday. On offense, OSU managed just 74 yards, including a negative 38 yards due to Alan Bowman sacks, while averaging 2.2 yards per carry. Baylor gave up 159.7 rushing yards per game.

Baylor had just as much trouble early on, however, as the teams were tied 17-17 at halftime. Much of the Bears' problems came from two turnovers inside OSU territory, a fourth-down fumble on their first drive and a pick throw by Sawyer Robertson inside the red zone on Baylor's third possession. However, after that interception, Baylor scored touchdowns on its next two drives.

OSU started the game with a field goal after being fouled deep in Baylor territory. The Cowboys then punted and fumbled on their next two possessions before Brennan Presley turned a failed screen pass into a miraculous 33-yard touchdown, tying the game at 10. Ollie Gordon equalized again with a short run 18 seconds before the half.

Baylor regained the lead for the third time with a 33-yard TD pass from Robertson to Ashtyn Hawkins. The only other point in the third quarter was a 26-yard field goal by Logan Ward for OSU.

However, the Pokes refused to give up in the fourth quarter, even as Baylor built a 31-20 lead midway through the frame. Gordon pushed his way through the Baylor defenders for another short touchdown. He then threw a pass to Presley, who made another impressive play to convert the two-point attempt and bring OSU within a three-pointer with 4:51 left.

Presley and Gordon did enough to keep the Cowboys respectable, but still weren't enough. With 15 balls for 183 yards, Presley was just a stone's throw away from his career high.

But then OSU's defense failed again. The Bears were back in the end zone four plays later after a 55-yard TD run by Dawson Pendergrass that finished with 142 rushing yards. The nail in the coffin was a Bowman interception with 1:30 left.

Next up for OSU is America's Greatest Homecoming when it hosts Arizona State on Saturday at 6 p.m. and will look to take advantage of the crowd at Boone Pickens Stadium to score its first Big 12 win of the season.
