LOS ANGELES – Before the Yankees left New York for the World Series on Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone addressed his team.

Boone didn't want to reveal what was said, but one thing was clear. The time for talking was over; Boone said he doesn't plan to address the Yanks as a group again.

It's time for action.

It's Game 1 of the World Series, the first for Boone as manager, the first for Yankees captain Aaron Judge and the first as a Yankee for Gerrit Cole, facing the NL champion Dodgers and right-hander Jack Flaherty.

Moments ago, the Dodgers honored the great Fernando Valenzuela, who passed away this week, by placing a baseball on his number 34 painted on the mound. There was no ceremonial first pitch.

Actor and Dodgers fan Bryan Cranston was honored to announce to this excited audience the late Vin Scully's famous line: “It's time for Dodger baseball.”

And here we go…

Cole customer

We were scoreless through three, with Gerrit Cole ending a 2-2 tie with a swinging strikeout against Shohei Ohtani.

Since the Freeman triple, Cole — a UCLA graduate who grew up in Southern California — has retired with three Ks seven straight times.

Jack Flaherty was coveted by the Yankees

Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty just completed another scoreless frame in this scoreless third inning – helped by a DP grounder from Juan Soto.

At the trade deadline, Yankees GM Brian Cashman was heavily involved in poaching Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers. Instead, the Dodgers included him in a two-player package that sent Trey Sweeney to Detroit.

Seven months earlier, the Yanks had sent Sweeney (a former Yankee first-round pick) to LA as part of a deal that brought in lefty Victor Gonzalez (who was eventually released by the Yanks) and second baseman Jorbit Vivas.

“I think Jack Flaherty is an exceptional starter,” Cashman said at the time, adding that he “certainly would have liked to have had him as a selection for us, as well as anyone else who might be an improvement in our rotation.”'

There were some questions about the medical reports on Flaherty's lower back, but “at the end of the day, if I could keep up, I would have called in Jack Flaherty.”

Avoid one at first

Gerrit Cole walked out of the first inning, leaving Freddie Freeman standing after a two-out triple – even while running on his damaged ankle.

In left field with two outs, former Dodger outfielder Alex Verdugo misread the carom on Freeman's slicing liner and grounded out to third base, but Cole got the ever-dangerous Teoscar Hernandez to come up short.

Earlier, the great Shohei Ohtani had taken the lead by knocking Cole's first throw out and flying to deep center. Next, Mookie Betts flied out to the left field lane.

First of all, nothing in New York New Year

Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty should have gotten out of the first inning one batter earlier, but shortstop Tommy Edman hit Giancarlo Stanton's grounder.

But Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to end the inning while Flaherty avoided a walk by Juan Soto. Chisholm Jr. is 3-for-27 (.111) in the playoffs since his home run in Game 2 of the ALDS against Kansas City.

The Yankees' ace is back in the World Series

Gerrit Cole was about to pitch in a World Series when he was traded to the Yankees.

At one point during his opening press conference in the Bronx in 2019, the club's new star spoke of the “need to win a World Cup and ideally more than one” during the life of his nine-year contract.

Entering World Series Game 5 in 2019, Cole had led the Houston Astros just shy of a World Series victory, but Juan Soto's Washington Nationals prevailed in seven games.

Tonight, Cole heads to his first World Series with the Yankees, starting Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.

This stint against the Dodgers lasted five years and comes seven months after Cole's elbow trouble was diagnosed with nerve inflammation in spring training.

“During his rehab, I often felt truly blessed to be able to host many of the great players we have and see the game in a new context,” Cole said.

In those days leading up to his June 19 return, Cole felt “like taking your kid to a baseball game for the first time” and just taking in “the competitive spirit of the players.”

“So that was a nice perspective and hopefully I learned a few things from it.”

As for the roster, the Yankees have removed versatile infielder Jon Berti from their roster due to a hip flexor injury he suffered in ALCS Game 4.

Left-hander Nestor Cortes was added following his rehab from a left elbow strain, although the Yankees still needed 13 pitchers, according to manager Aaron Boone.
