The battle for Paul Bunyan is just around the corner.

The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines will meet on Saturday in their annual matchup, a tale of two teams with the same records (4-3, 2-2 in conference play) but different circumstances.

The Spartans are on a high, having just pulled off a commanding victory over an impressive (if somewhat flawed) Iowa Hawkeyes team. Quarterback Aidan Chiles managed to put it all together, the ground game was going, Nick Marsh was Nick Marsh and the defense held strong.

Michigan, however, lost even further with a loss to a strong Illinois team. The Wolverines have been hampered by an anemic offense this season, and the trigger could be a quarterback carousel with no answers.

This Spartans team is looking to avenge last season's 49-0 loss at Spartan Stadium, but this is still a rivalry. It will be a physical, tough game.

Who are the five players Michigan State needs to deliver the most?

Lynch-Adams had his best performance of the season against the Hawkeyes, rushing for 86 yards on 15 attempts. He is the epitome of this regime's prototypical running back – he's shifty, fast and runs furiously.

The first tacklers against Lynch-Adams are either shaken off or rejected. The offensive line was nothing short of dominant against the Wolverines, but Lynch-Adams' skills on the second level of defense are game-changing.

The Spartans will want to control the clock against the Wolverines, and to do that they need a big day from their best running back.

The true freshman is simply the biggest game-breaker on the team. He can burn you deep or cast spells once he has the ball in his hands. Not complicated.

Last week against a very good Iowa defense, Marsh had eight catches for 113 yards and earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season. How he performs against the best cornerback in the country, Michigan's Will Johnson, will be very telling.

Marsh has good free receivers in Montorie Foster Jr. and Jaron Glover, so at least expect him to get open looks at them. If he doesn't get the attention he deserves, Marsh changes the game with a single play.

The Spartans' best linebacker was arguably their biggest transfer portal gem next to their quarterback. Turner has top-notch downhill instincts that extend from sideline to sideline.

He's athletic and comfortable in coverage – perfect for success in Joe Rossi's defense.

Turner always seems to be coming up with big defensive maneuvers, whether it's knocking out a ball, getting a key sack or tackle for a loss, or even making a necessary interception. The Wolverines will likely do everything they have on this defense. Turner will still have a lot of work to do.

Yes, that's obvious. Simply put, Chiles needs to continue to improve and build on one outstanding performance against a strong Iowa defense. He has to compete against the best defensive lineman and cornerback in the country. And with Wink Martindale, an experienced defensive coordinator.

Ball control and tact management will be crucial in this game. The Spartans need Chiles to be at his best to bring Paul Bunyan to East Lansing.

Marsh, Foster and Glover will receive a lot of attention in this Wolverine secondary. Velling had his moments this season, but due to the high expectations he brought with him from Corvallis, he largely underperformed.

Velling's big game could be huge as he is a mismatch for most defenders that would be assigned to him. Look for Velling to score critical first downs.
