In the late 1960s, residents of California's San Francisco Bay Area were gripped by fear as a mysterious serial killer left cryptic clues for police. The mystery of the so-called “Zodiac Killer” remains unsolved to this day and is considered the most infamous unsolved murder case in American history and has been revisited in a new Netflix series, This is the Zodiac Speaking.

It has spawned numerous documentaries and fictional depictions from Dirty Harry to The Batman. However, a California TikTok user named J Foy not only claims to have identified the dreaded killer, but also claims he is the killer's grandson.

Foy revealed: “It doesn’t just depend on appearance. I recently typed my grandfather's name into Google and to my surprise, internet sleuths have been throwing my grandfather's name around for years and associating it with the Zodiac Motherf***. **g Killer. He submitted a series of photos of his grandfather Richard Hoffman from the time of the Zodiac's Reign of Terror and he says they look like “He submitted several photos of his grandfather Richard Hoffman.” the time of Reign of Terror of the Zodiac, and in his opinion they look “just like him.”

Foy went on to mention that his grandfather was a police officer in Vallejo, Northern California, which may explain how the notorious serial killer might have managed to avoid capture – if the claims are true, of course.

The Zodiac Killer, officially linked to five murders, claimed in letters to police that he killed 37 people. Two of the confirmed victims, Michael Renault Mageau and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin, were driving through Vallejo one night when they were chased by a car that resembled an unmarked police vehicle, the Mirror reports.

This happened on a night when the speaker's grandfather was on duty, driving an unmarked police car and wearing civilian clothes. True crime podcaster Kris Collins continues the story: “As (Mageau and Ferrin) were driving around, a car was supposedly following them the whole time…like a police car might…and that was the same night as his grandfather.” was reportedly on duty, doing his own patrol in an unmarked car and wearing civilian clothing.”

After being chased, they parked in the Blue Rock Springs parking lot, where the killer's car pulled up next to them.

The killer got out of his vehicle and Ferrin allegedly said, “Oh my God, that's Richard, he's going to kill us both” – a statement made because of her secret relationship with a police officer.

Mageau later stated that Ferrin “knew” the Zodiac Killer and called him “Richard” shortly before her death. The speaker mentions in his TikTok that Ferrin, although married, was known for dating multiple men at the same time and was particularly afraid of one of them: “It was known to her circle of friends that she was dating a Vallejo police officer, although she was “never told them the name.”

Hoffman reportedly showed up “uninvited” to a party at Ferrin's apartment, where she expressed to her friends that she was “dead afraid of him.”

Foy further points out: “My grandfather denies these claims – he says he has never seen them. But later he goes on to say, 'I know she worked at a local restaurant here in Vallejo.' How the hell did you never see her grandpa? Will you tell me about it!”

Foy also points out that his grandfather repeatedly misspelled “until” as “until,” a quirk that the Zodiac also shared in his taunting letters to the police. Adding to the circumstantial evidence, Foy notes that Cheri Bates, believed to be the Zodiac's first victim, had moved from Nebraska to the Bay Area, just like his grandfather.

On the night of her murder, Bates was in the Riverside College library, and it is believed her killer sabotaged her blue Volkswagen Beetle in the parking lot to make her an easier target. Kris Collins reveals another horrifying detail: a graphic poem about murder was discovered under the desk where Bates was studying.

“Forensic analysis revealed that the poem was written by the Zodiac Killer based on the spelling…and to add an even stranger level, the initials next to the poem are RH – his grandfather's initials.”

While it remains uncertain whether the infamous Zodiac Killer was responsible for Bates' murder, it is likely that she knew her killer. A detailed “confession”, presumably from the serial killer, was sent to a local newspaper, saying his motive was “to make her pay for the rejections she had given me over the years”.

In 1971, the Zodiac Killer wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Times explicitly claiming responsibility for Bates' murder and pointing out that there were many more undiscovered victims.

Foy also revealed that his grandfather, who was known in the family to be controlling, manipulative and unfaithful, may have been a suspect. However, it is unlikely that these claims will ever be substantiated since his grandfather is no longer alive.

The first episode of This is the Zodiac Speaking premiered today (Wednesday, October 23) on Netflix.
