INDIANAPOLIS – Before JJ Redick took the Lakers head coaching job, Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton appeared several times on his podcast Old Man & The Three. The chemistry between him and Redick was obvious, and Haliburton's basketball geek knowledge matched that of the 15-year pro who has spent the last few years working as an analyst for ESPN.

So Haliburton expected that if Redick went to the Lakers and the podcast continued, he would have the opportunity to play a role on the show. What he couldn't count on, however, was what his first assignment would be.

The company that holds the rights to Redick's podcast announced on its social media accounts Tuesday morning that the podcast would be renamed “The Young Man and the 3” and hosted by rotating players. The first show had already been taped for release on Wednesday, with Haliburton as host and former President Barack Obama as the first guest.

“When JJ left Old Man and the 3, there was obviously a gap there,” Haliburton said. “This is something they have wanted from me for some time. I can't commit to doing a whole podcast because there are so many podcasts, but when they asked me to host the first one with the former president, I just could. “You can't say no to that.

Haliburton called it “a full-circle moment” because his admiration for Obama dates back to his childhood.

“He’s an incredible guy, a guy I’ve looked up to my whole life, so it was really special for me to sit with him,” Haliburton said. “…I was 8 years old when he was elected president, and when you're 8 years old you don't really know much about politics, but you understand that a black man holds the most powerful position in the world and stuff.” From then on I was just hooked and loved everything about President Obama.”

Haliburton said he found out about the interview several weeks earlier and sat down with the podcast's producers to ask questions. On the Pacers' off day last week, he flew to Washington DC for an interview. It was his second meeting with Obama, who spent time with Haliburton and other members of Team USA ahead of this summer's Olympics.

Haliburton said the interview was about the upcoming election, with Obama campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris, and how athletes and other influencers could properly use their platform. However, Haliburton said he and Obama spent more time talking about basketball than any of those topics. Obama played the game himself growing up and famously hosted pick-up games during the 2008 campaign.

Eastern Conference Rankings: Where will the Pacers land in a crazy competitive race?

“He’s the greatest speaker of my generation and my life, so he makes it pretty easy,” Haliburton said. “I just asked the questions and had a conversation. We talked about the Olympics and how we covered (Nikola) Jokic. He went into the details and it was really cool to see how much of a basketball fan he is, but to sit down with him and have a real conversation with him was really cool.
