According to sources, the NBA will likely investigate the Sixers' decision to use Joel Embiid as their starter

The NBA will likely launch an investigation into 76ers center Joel Embiid's player involvement later this week, a league source confirmed Wednesday.

The 2023 Most Valuable Player did not participate in any games or scrimmage drills this preseason due to his surgically repaired left knee. On Tuesday, the Sixers announced that Embiid would miss this week's games because of what the team called what the team called an injury to his left knee.

The Sixers open the season on Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Wells Fargo Center. They then play away games against the Toronto Raptors (Friday) and the Indiana Pacers (Sunday).

Sources say the league often investigates when one of its top players misses a nationally televised game. The Sixers' opening game against the Bucks will be televised by ESPN.

The team said Embiid is responding well to his individual plan and is expected to increase his return-to-game activities this week, including participating in scrimmages.

The league's player participation policy was implemented last season to improve competitiveness, fan interest and game integrity.

Under the policy, teams must have a good reason to bench a healthy star player. It is also not allowed for several star players to sit out at the same time. Stars must also be available for nationally televised tournament competitions and during the season.

Sixers All-Star Paul George (left knee bruise) will also miss Wednesday's game.
