Carbery said he liked what he saw from Mangiapane and how he helped his linemates Jakub Vrana and Hendrix Lapierre.

“The way he plays and stabilizes that line is, for me, the reason I put him on that line after the first game of the season,” Carbery said. “He plays in every situation, on the power play, on the penalty kill, and for him, especially when you come to a new team, I said this the other day, it helps when you score and get on the board.”

“These are big goals. In this league it is not easy to score points with an outlier group. They get a few of them, “Chucky” makes big saves and to get downfield in those situations you really need a second on the road, a huge goal. A huge goal for Mang and I’m happy for him.”

Sanheim scored from the left circle 34 seconds into the third period to make it 2-1, before Carlson gave Washington a 3-1 lead with a goal from the left faceoff circle at 1:38.

“Obviously I don’t like to give up right away after I get the momentum,” Sanheim said. “Just an unfortunate jump, he bounces off one of our guys’ skates.”

Philadelphia had a total of eight shots on goal in the second and third periods.

“There are a lot of people in this room who score goals and we will continue here,” Sanheim said. “I’m not worried about it.”

Chychrun made it 4-1 with a one-timer from the high position at 2:07 p.m.

The teams will play Wednesday at Capital One Arena in Washington.

NOTES: Carlson (two goals, four assists) and Strome (three goals, five assists) each extended his point streak to five games. … Vrana's assist on Chychrun's goal was his 100th in the NHL. … Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler had two shots on goal and two goals in 15:30 minutes of ice time in his first game of the season. He had missed five games because of a nerve problem in his right leg that he suffered while blocking a pass during a preseason game on October 1.
