Anthony Edwards: “If I win a ring in the next three to four years, I will play football”

Anthony Edwards is a star of the modern social media era because he says what's on his mind unfiltered.

Take his interview with ESPN at the start of Tuesday's Cover Story, in which he says if he wins a ring in the next few years, he'll play football.

“I told my mates if I win a ring in the next three to four years I will play football.”

Edwards has drawn comparisons to Michael Jordan before because both are explosively athletic and attack the rim with a rare ferocity. This reinforces that connection – Jordan left his teammates and the NBA after his first three-pointer to try out baseball for a few seasons. Edwards is undoubtedly a great athlete and by age 11 he was dominating on the gridironto. If Edwards had committed to football at that point, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Edwards could have been a quarterback, a running back or perhaps a free safety. But just like basketball (or any other sport), it takes time to develop the skills needed to play at the highest level, and Edwards has focused on basketball.

He and the Timberwolves could win a ring and put his theory to the test. While Minnesota has to answer questions about how all the pieces fit together following the departure of Karl-Anthony Towns and the signings of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, the Timberwolves need to be ranked in the NBA's top tier heading into this season. Edwards will be in the MVP conversation.
