Miami Dolphins returnee Braxton Berrios is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL

Miami Dolphins returning receiver/receiver Braxton Berrios is out for the season with a knee injury and no one is more upset than his famous girlfriend.

Social media star Alix Earle posted her thoughts on Instagram after Berrios tore his ACL on a kick return Sunday against the Colts and was placed on injured reserve Monday.

“It's crazy how things can change in a matter of seconds… especially when you see how much work you put into this game, not only physically but mentally,” Earle wrote to her 3.7 million Instagram followers.

The bigger concern for Dolphins fans is who will replace Berrios on special teams. The former Miami Hurricane had seven punt returns for 103 yards (long of 44) and three kickoffs for 76 yards (long of 33) this season and was a constant presence with his kicks.

Likely options at punt returner include rookie receiver Malik Washington and veteran receiver Dee Eskridge. Running back De'Von Achane and Washington can return kickoffs.

It seems unlikely that Miami would use stars Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle or Jevon Holland in the return game. On the other hand, nothing is impossible – especially when a team is 2-4.

Berrios, who has had limited playing time as a receiver this season, was injured on a kickoff return in the second half of Sunday's game in Indianapolis and left the field limping.

Berrios, who will be a free agent after the season, also posted on Instagram about the end of his season.

“The road ahead will be measured in months, not days, but I take comfort in knowing I've been here before. There will be pain along the way, but what’s on the other side is worth it.”

The Dolphins replaced Berrios on the roster by activating cornerback Cam Smith from injured reserve. Smith, who played in 15 games as a rookie last year, injured his hamstring in August.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is also expected to be placed off IR this week after recovering from a concussion.
