A college football head coach in the Sun Belt has become the second to lose his job after Week 8.

Southern Miss head coach Will Hall was fired after a 1-6 start to the 2024 season and an overall record of 14-30. Hall has been the head coach of the Golden Eagles since 2021.

“We are grateful to Will and his family for their commitment to Southern Miss over the past four years,” Southern Miss athletic director Jeremy McClain said in a statement. “Will has put his heart and soul into this program and the training of these young men. Unfortunately, the results on the field did not meet our shared goals and expectations.”

Hall, who was the offensive coordinator at Tulane for two seasons before taking the job at Southern Miss, has had significant success as a head coach at the Division II level. He posted a 25-11 record in three seasons at West Alabama and three seasons at West Georgia a 31-9 record and led the Wolves to back-to-back national semifinal appearances in 2014 and 2015.

He then joined the Louisiana staff, where he served as offensive coordinator for one season before moving to Memphis as assistant head coach and tight ends coach. After two seasons as offensive coordinator at Tulane, he was hired as head coach at Southern Miss.

Hall went 3-9 in 2021, but the Golden Eagles improved to 7-6 in 2022 – their first year in the Sun Belt – and won the LendingTree Bowl against Rice. However, they fell to 3-9 in 2023 and 1-6 in 7 games in 2024.

Earlier Sunday, Mike Houston was fired by East Carolina in the middle of his sixth season. And Oklahoma has reportedly made a personnel change, relieving offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Seth Litrell of his duties.
