The Washington Commanders nickname has been a sensitive issue for the organization since moving on from the Redskins before the start of the 2020 season.

The football team had been known as the Redskins since 1933, when the team was originally based in Boston. The franchise won three Super Bowls and two NFL championships as the Redskins. But ongoing accusations of racism over the nickname and a summer of racial unrest led former team owner Daniel Snyder to officially back away from it altogether.

The Redskins moved to the Washington Football Team and then to the Commanders in 2022.

Even as petitions and rallies called for the team to return to its old moniker, team marketing director Patrick Arthur made it clear to the Washington Post that there was no turning back.

“We would like to have them back when they are finished,” he said in the story published Friday. “Honestly, it’s on their terms. As our owner said, we will not go back to the old name. This is not something we can do. But we will carry on as many traditions (as we can) And a lot of what we do is honor the past. And when they're ready to come back, we can't wait to have them, whether they're wearing our merchandise or the old clothes.

Arthur added that it was “important” to write a new chapter in the organization’s history.

Now the new chapter has firmly begun with quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm. He was named offensive rookie of the year through the first six weeks of the season.
