Jackson State University wants to induct a new class into the Sports Hall of Fame

Jackson State University will honor its athletic legacy this Friday evening by inducting a new JSU Sports Hall of Fame class. The event celebrates the contributions and achievements of 14 outstanding individuals from five different sports and recognizes their influence on and off the field.

From the ballpark

Michael Brook is a standout baseball player who was instrumental in leading the Tigers to their first Area II National Association of Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association title in 1974. Nicknamed “Moohah,” he was named First Team All-SWAC in 1975 after winning 18 games and recording over 200 strikeouts at JSU. Brooks eventually played for the Montreal Expos after being drafted in the 11th round.

On the courts

JSU will honor basketball icons Richard Bradley Jr. And Ryan Lorthridge for their exemplary careers. In addition to leading Jackson State to a conference championship, Bradley earned two degrees while giving back to the community as a coach and board member of various organizations. A former NBA player known for his time with the Golden State Warriors, Lorthridge left a lasting impression on the JSU basketball program and joined the prestigious 1,000-point club as a Tiger.

The volleyball program will recognize it Rose Washingtonwho achieved great success as a head coach. She earned an impressive 344 wins and led the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Her leadership skills earned her recognition as a five-time SWAC Coach of the Year.

On the field

The football community will celebrate several legends including Tim Barnetwho excelled at JSU before playing for the Kansas City Chiefs; Cephus Jackson, drafted by the Los Angeles Rams; And Sylvester Morristhe school's all-time leading receiver and a first-round draft pick for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2000.

Other award winners are: Larry Jones, Derek Perkins, Leon Sherrodand well-known supporters like Eddie Jameswho played various roles in college sports and community building.

On the track

The new additions are rounded off by track and field athletes Tommy Denniswho holds several records, Jerry L. KennedyAnd Raina Sanders Nelsonwho shined during her college career. Additionally, LaToya Clarka former volleyball player and current assistant head coach, is being recognized for her accomplishments, including being named the 2012 SWAC Woman of the Year.

This year's ceremony promises to be unforgettable and honors the rich history and achievements of Jackson State Athletics.
