“Agatha All Along’s Wicca Backstory Reveal Fails”

2 minutes, 41 seconds Read

I thought the Wicca reveal in last week's Agatha All Along was fantastic. I thought what was missing this week was explaining how this version of Wicca, Billy Maximoff, came to be. And confusing.

First, the trailer for the episode basically spoiled the main reveal, that this wasn't simply an adult version of the Billy created by Wanda, but Billy's, er, spirit, entering William Kaplan's body as Westview in The Magic Dome has collapsed.

What follows is… very strange. William/Billy doesn't remember anything from before the accident in which he died and was brought back to life by Billy's life force. But he doesn't know who he is either Strictly speaking Until he conducts a research project and finds out he is Billy Maximoff. Or at least a part of Billy Maximoff, since he doesn't seem to have any of it be also memories. I'm not sure how he's even doing since he has virtually no memories of either version of himself.

He's not looking for “revenge” against Agatha, he's just trying to free her from her magical spell in the fantasy world where she's a detective (that scene was very funny) so she can take him on the witch's road . He said this completely honestly, and it comes very soon after he finds out who he is.

One surprise is that his main goal is to find his brother Tommy and not his mother, which was at least a theory before we knew his memories are all messed up (Wanda loved him very much!), but at least he feels like he is Tommy his brother somewhere out there. Therefore, a Wanda resurrection may not be in the cards on this show after all.

Last week it seemed to me like this was all a very elaborate trick where Wiccan, with all his Westview memories, knew who he was and simply pretended to be someone else, hence his heel turn attack against the witches. But…this appears to be the first time he's actually used magic like this, mind control when summoning his Scarlet Witch's Crown. Then he can't do it again. He cannot control these powers, and before he could only read minds. Sometimes.

The whole thing played out much better when it seemed like it was the master plan of a Billy who knew who he was, exploited his mother's enemy (he remembered their entire conflict) and had his powers long before had mastered. This idea of double amnesia and newly emerging powers only when he's angry doesn't feel so cool and doesn't seem like such a good explanation. I could have bought the “soul enters his body” part, but everything that followed didn't seem to make sense to me or hit the emotional rhythm it needed.

I'm obviously not tuning in to the show, I just think this aspect of the series could have been handled better, especially after such a cool reveal the week before.
