Chennai Thunderstorm: Viral video of lightning strike triggers reactions of fear and fascination on social media amid heavy rains

A series of thunderstorms recently swept across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, triggering heavy rain and strong lightning. This storm quickly became a social media sensation as users shared the stunning images with a viral video of a lightning striking a building. This video evoked not only a sense of fascination, but also a sense of fear. Meteorologists explained the conditions and emphasized the ongoing risks of such severe weather. The lightning strike not only highlighted the beauty of the event, but also highlighted the danger it posed.
A video showing a lightning strike during rain in Chennai went viral on social media. The clip shared by X user Pattabi Raman shows the sky lighting up in bright purple as powerful lightning strikes. The video is tagged with the hashtags #Sholinganallur (a suburb in Chennai) and #ChennaiRains. The night sky is dramatically illuminated, giving the event an otherworldly appearance.

Social media reactions to the thunderstorm in Chennai – “A wonderful click!”

The video sparked mixed reactions from social media users. Many expressed a mixture of fear and admiration for the raw power of nature. Some praised the video with comments like “Beautiful shot of a thunderstorm” and “Wonderful click.” Others expressed their excitement at the unique footage and said they had not seen such a lightning display in a long time. However, due to the prevalence of fake videos, some users questioned the authenticity of the footage, but the original poster confirmed that it was real and not created using technology.

IMD warns of heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, including capital Chennai

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai had predicted heavy rains across Tamil Nadu from October 12 to 15. This weather pattern was associated with a low-pressure trough extending from the east-central Arabian Sea off the coast of Maharashtra to the southeast Arabian Sea off the coast of Kerala, according to Senthamarai Kannan, deputy director general of meteorology at the RMC.
This event occurred as thunderstorms hit Tamil Nadu, a state known for tropical storms during the monsoon season. The video in question captured a rare and visually striking moment – a lightning bolt striking a building during heavy rain in Chennai. The attention it gained on social media underscores the awe and fear that natural phenomena like thunderstorms often inspire. Lightning strikes are visually spectacular, but can be incredibly dangerous, causing significant damage to buildings and power grids and even endangering lives.

Why are lightning strikes fascinating and dangerous?

Lightning strikes occur when there is an imbalance between the electrical charges in a thundercloud and the ground, resulting in a sudden discharge of electricity. This discharge, called lightning, can reach temperatures of up to 30,000 °C (54,000 °F) and release an immense amount of energy. While the visual beauty of lightning is mesmerizing, especially when it illuminates the sky in brilliant colors, it is also a stark reminder of the uncontrollable power of nature.

Captivating beauty and potential danger in Chennai's thunderstorms

The video from Chennai illustrates this dual nature: on the one hand, viewers are afraid of the potential harm it represents and, on the other hand, they are fascinated by its fleeting, breathtaking appearance. Through social media, these rare moments can be shared widely, making them accessible to people far beyond the immediate area.
The weather forecasts of the Regional Meteorological Center explain the cause of the thunderstorms and link them to a low pressure trough in the Arabian Sea. Such systems often produce heavy rains and thunderstorms during the monsoon season, and the weather forecast warned that similar weather patterns would continue for several days.
