Bob Costas gets Kansas City Royals first baseman Yuli Guerriel up to speed after an error

2 minutes, 15 seconds Read

Yuli Gurriel has played more big league games than any other first baseman still in the playoffs.

Still, the Kansas City Royals veteran made a mistake on a routine play Wednesday night.

Gurriel's Royals trailed the New York Yankees by one, 3-2, entering the ninth inning of Game 3 of the ALDS. Relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen got Juan Soto to chop a grounder to second, seemingly moving Kansas City closer to the bottom of the frame, but the play didn't go as planned.

Michael Massey threw the ball downfield and threw a low throw to Gurriel, who popped it right out of his glove as Soto reached it safely.

In case the mistake itself wasn't bad enough, TBS play-by-play announcer Bob Costas roasted Gurriel with a brutal call.

“The throw is dropped by Gurriel at first base,” Costas exclaimed. “Gurriel played an outstanding first base in this series and then drops one that your 10-year-old playing catch in the backyard would have caught.”

As color analyst Ron Darling began to describe what was happening during the slow-motion replay, Costas talked over him and repeatedly said “Oops!” as Gurriel's mistake was shown.

Costas has come under widespread criticism for his numerous poor decisions throughout the ALDS. He is regularly accused of distorting key moments, overreacting to flyouts and generally favoring the Yankees.

Gurriel's error led to another strange moment for Costas over the airwaves this week, even if it didn't end up costing the Royals the win. Regardless, New York won 3-2 and took a 2-1 lead in the series.

After going 1-for-7 in the AL Wild Card Series against the Baltimore Orioles, Gurriel has gone 3-for-10 in the ALDS so far with a double and two walks against the Yankees. He is now a .265 hitter with a .705 OPS in his postseason career.

Gurriel won World Series rings with the Houston Astros in 2017 and 2022, and also won a batting title and the Gold Glove in 2021. In his career, he has saved 16 defensive runs at first base in the regular season and has managed just four errors in 690 chances in the postseason before Wednesday.

The 40-year-old Cuban veteran will look to help the Royals extend the ALDS when Game 4 begins Thursday night at 8:08 p.m. ET.
