Christine Brennan disputes Sarah Spain's report that she filed a complaint with the WNBA

As a historic season nears its end and the WNBA Finals are set to begin later this week, the league is also dealing with sports media drama.

Over the last few weeks USA today Columnist Christine Brennan's coverage of the WNBA has come under scrutiny following her controversial questioning of Connecticut Suns guard DiJonai Carrington following a collision with Caitlin Clark. Brennan's reporting has already drawn criticism from the WNBA players' union and other journalists, with the longtime columnist – who is writing a book about Clark – standing by her actions.

Now the situation between Brennan and the League has reached a new level in the form of her recent appearance on the Good game with Sarah Spain Podcast.

During her conversation with Spain, Brennan recalled the fallout from her controversial questioning of Carrington and revealed that she was confronted by Carrington's Suns teammate DeWanna Bonner. But while Brennan downplayed the confrontational nature of the conversation with Bonner, that could be open to interpretation, as Spain reported Monday that the columnist had filed a complaint with the league regarding the exchange.

In our interview, Christine discussed an exchange with the Sun's DeWanna Bonner, saying, “I wouldn't call it, um, heated. I would call it a person coming up to me to talk to me.”

However, Brennan quickly disputed Spain's reporting while questioning the reason for the former Spain & Fitz The co-host has not reached out to her regarding the matter.

“Hello Sarah, that’s inaccurate. It's wrong. I have not filed a complaint. I have not contacted anyone in the league,” Brennan wrote. “Your sources are wrong. You and I have a long and good relationship, which is why I always enjoy speaking to you. Why didn’t you call me before you posted this?”

While much of the controversy surrounding Brennan's reporting on the WNBA involved shades of gray, the question of whether she filed a report with the league is somewhat secondary. Either she filed a complaint with the WNBA and Spain's report is accurate, or she didn't and the report is inaccurate.

Anyway, Brennan makes a valid point by asking why Spain hasn't contacted her about the report, especially given the pre-existing relationship between them. It will be interesting to see what comes of this whole ordeal, especially since one of the most high-profile WNBA Finals in recent memory is set to begin on Thursday.
