2 truths and a lie from Nebraska Cornhuskers guarding the UTRGV Vaqueros

The Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team concluded their season For a few brief moments on Monday, it looked like there would be more pain for Huskers fans. In the end, they managed to get a big win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.

There were times when it looked like NU was ready to take charge. And then UTRGV would make a bit of a comeback. But in the last minutes of the game Newcomer Connor Essegian stepped up, and the team finally got hot when they needed to ran to an 87-67 victory.

Brice Williams and Juwan Gary's return The offseason has been huge for the Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team. That was immediately clear, but Williams showed how great he is in the first game of the year.

Williams had a Husker career-high, leading all scorers with 27 points and 5 rebounds Monday night. He also remained stable at the free throw line, hitting 10 of 11 attempts. While he wasn't particularly good from distance (1-for-6 from 3-pointers), there were times when he was NU's only offense. With Keisei Tominaga gone, Nebrasketball needs someone to talk to. It could be him.

The Huskers have struggled with turnovers throughout the offseason and into this year's practice. These issues came early and often at PBA on Monday. They finished the night with 13 turnovers, which isn't bad for a complete game.

But against an opponent at UTRGV's level, it's not great. The Vaqueros also turned the ball over the goal 20 times. If they hadn't reached this insane number, the situation would have been even more frightening.

Opening night around sports is always interesting as everyone goes out. It's hard to judge the rest of the season based on a team's first game. South Carolina lost to North Florida on Monday. No. 13 Texas A&M lost to unranked South Carolina.

For today you get the victory. But the Nebraska Cornhuskers need to step up their game as a showdown with Creighton isn't far off. And before that, a game against St. Mary's will be anything but easy.
